Law assures strict procedures for the preservation of the natural environment which is about 25% of the country’s territory. Traveling in Costa Rica is a relaxing experience.
There are approximately 3.6 million inhabitants (2000) whose native language is Spanish. Other languages are English, German, French and Italian. The foreign visitor will find it easy to make himself understood.
There are seven provinces in Costa Rica; San Jose, Alajuela, Heredia, Puntarenas, Cartago, Guanacaste and Limon. The capital, San Jose is the most densely populated of all the provinces.
Costa Rica’s national territory is 19,700 square miles. Within its’ borders you can find more than a dozen volcanoes, expanses of jungles, several mountain ranges, countless streams and rivers, 755 miles of coast line stretched along two oceans, an amazing collection of ecosystems, dozens of national parks and reserves, beautiful beaches, spectacular waterfalls, rivers that range from white water rippers to tranquil jungle waterways, colorful coral reefs, extensive haciendas that function as hotels, verdant mountain retreats, laid back seaside villages and the historic towns of the Central Valley.
There is a remarkable diversity of birds, orchids, trees, mammals, fish, butterflies, frogs, etc. Outdoor diversions include horseback tours, white water rafting, bungee jumping, canopy zip lines, surfing, diving, kayakers, windsurfing, hiking and mountain biking.
This country has a number of tour operators which offer an array of excursions led by knowledgeable bilingual guides. But Costa Rica is also an easy country to explore on your own, thanks to an extensive network of roads (yes they are fixing them as of 12-05), regular bus service to its every corner and daily flights to a dozen of its most popular towns. There are also plenty of car rental companies and enough hotels and restaurants scattered across the provinces to make touring on your own an easy undertaking. No matter which of the county’s abundant attractions hold your interest, its natural beauty and friendly citizens are sure to make your stay in Costa Rica, whether a visit or a lifetime an unforgettable one.
